Just five short years after jumping on a couch on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Tom Cruise is going to be using that couch to cry into instead, since wife Katie Holmes filed for divorce today. According to People Magazine and Holmes' rep, " Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy.
The couple was married at an Italian castle in the fall of 2006, after a short courtship that brought us the infamous couch-jumping moment, wherein Cruise proclaimed his love for the young actress. Holmes, 33, and Cruise, 49, have one child together, Suri, a 6-year old daughter.
Holmes' attorney Jonathan Wolfe told People, "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."
Though there hadn't been any rumors of their marriage being on the rocks, Holmes has been notably absent during Cruise's media rounds as he's been promoting Rock of Ages.
This was Holmes' first marriage, but Cruise's third. He was previous married to Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two children, and Mimi Rogers.
It's unknown what the cause of the split is, but it has been widely speculated over the years that Cruise is actually gay. We can't comment on that whatsoever, and besides, we think the Scientology thing would come up first if we were to make a list of "reasons not to marry Tom Cruise." We'll have to wait and see what happens.
