We knew years ago that Titanic was a leader in box office history, but this weekend it hit a new milestone. It passed the milestone of $2 billion in ticket sales with the re-release of the picture in 3D! The only other movie in the world that has broken that billion dollar mark is James Cameron’s 2009 epic science-fiction film Avatar.

The movie, starring a young Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett, melted hearts and boosted tissue sales everywhere in 1997 when it was originally released into theaters.  Now, with a re-release in honor of the 100th anniversary of the ship’s devastating collision with an iceberg in the Atlantic, moviegoers not only get to experience the emotional film on the big screen once again, but in a much more realistic manner.

Just this weekend the film brought in about $100 million worldwide, bringing it up to a hugely successful $190.8 million. I’d say that re-release idea was DEFINITELY a good one! The box office totals since Titanic's original debut now totals $2.02 billion and James Cameron is officially credited with the only two movies to reach this monetary success!
