Juliette Lewis, who is famous for her roles in movies like Natural Born Killers and, more recently, Due Date, is in the final stages of preparing a feature film – a documentary about her musical career.

Though Lewis is best known for her acting career, a decade ago she embarked on a second career as a rock singer, first with Juliette and the Licks and later with the New Romantiques.

Lewis partnered with Chris Maybach and Patrick Cunningham of Mayback Entertainment, the producer of Martha Marcy May Marlene, and her manager, Brandy Lewis, to produce the documentary. Saerom Kim and Saemi Kim are executive producing.

Cunningham said, “I first heard her sing four years ago when I was at Cannes and I was blown away at how good she is.” He and his partners have collected about 400 hours of footage, and have just about finished editing it all down into a feature-length film.

Lewis’ bands have performed hundreds of shows, including appearances at festivals like Leeds, Redding, and the Warped Tour. As for why she got into music, she said, “I knew when I was 28 I had to keep pushing myself into areas where I felt uncomfortable and exposed. I’ve always been interested in living dangerously so going into music like this has sort of been by unleashing my love affair with my audiences.”

She stressed that the project isn’t just a self-indulgent one, but instead an exploration of how performing live music became her full-time primary career over acting –with extensive social networking. “In music, your fan base is everything,” she says.

The finished film is expected to debut at Sundance in January.
