Denis O’Hare spends three and a half hours getting ready to film his scenes on American Horror Story. Considering half his character’s face is, well, kind of missing, it takes quite a bit of time and makeup to make him look like Larry Harvey!
“The makeup guys are fantastic, but it was a three and a half hour stint in the chair,” said Denis. “We took a little break here and there, but mostly we were doing it and the end result was this fantastic thing that had no beginning and no end; even up close. You really couldn’t see where my face began and ended. It was just extraordinary. These guys are really talented.”
Larry is a very unique character on the show. He’s funny and ridiculously pathetic. Denis said how fun it was to be able to play someone who got to be gothic, ironic, smart, humorous and occasionally really moving.
“I loved my scenes with Jessica,” he said. “We had a great scene where she came to visit me in my apartment and puts a knife to my nether regions and threatens me and then we had a scene in the prison where she’s coming to say goodbye and not giving me the satisfaction of actually saying goodbye, which was heartbreaking. I also had a great scene with Connie Britton in the house when I was pretending to be a buyer, which I loved.”
