There are a lot of things that can contribute to a show's "jumping the shark," and usually, straying far from the storyline (if said show is based off a book) is one of those factors. So hopefully, Dallas Roberts' addition to the cast won't do just that to The Walking Dead, as the actor is being brought on to play "Milton," a completely original character not in the comics.
Executive producer Robert Kirkman says of the character, "Milton is the details guy. He's the guy that works with the Governor, who is monitoring all situations and is trying to help the Governor make sense of the world that they're living in. He's not exactly a scientist, but he's a smart guy that is trying to find out how zombies behave."
The show will also be adding the aforementioned Governor, as well as Michonne, two of the most famous characters from the graphic novels, to the upcoming season. The show's third season is set to premiere on AMC on October 14.
If Roberts looks familiar to you, it may be from his role on AMC's show Rubicon, though he also has a recurring role as Juliana Margulies' character's brother on The Good Wife.
His character on The Walking Dead will work through ways to make himself useful to the group. Showrunner Glen Mazzara says, " We were examining, 'How do people surive in this apocalyptic world, and what can people contribute?' And we didn't think it was plausible that every single character we meet is an efficient zombie killer. We just didn't buy that everyone we know would be active and deft enough to kill every walker. We wanted to show how other people survive, and Dallas has come in and helped us establish that character."
It should be interesting to see how the story progresses this year.
