It's been a rougher-than-normal weekend for Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong. On Friday, the band performed at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas, and halfway through their set, Armstrong stopped and launched into an expletive-filled rant, followed by smashing his guitar and walking offstage. It was in response to thinking their set had been cut short (it hadn't), and now, the singer has checked into rehab for substance abuse.
The band posted the news on their Facebook page today, writing, "Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse. We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas."
It's not the first time this month that Armstrong has wrestled with health issues. Earlier in September, he was rushed to a hospital in Italy while the band was on tour, and the band was forced to cancel a show. Though the illness was not disclosed at the time, it would stand to reason to speculate that the earlier hospitalization might have something to do with substance abuse also.
The band has said they will be cancelling some upcoming promotional appearances as well.
