AMC has yet to let me down, so I had high hopes for their newest show. Their latest original series, The Killing, premiered on April 3rd with a two-hour debut. For its first (and second?) episode(s), it pulled in 2.7 million viewers, the second-highest ratings score for an AMC original series – right behind the extremely popular show The Walking Dead.

In its third episode, which aired last Sunday, it pulled in 2.6 million – holding strong, and it’s easy to see why.

The Killing tells the story of a young girl, Rosie Larsen, who goes missing over a weekend, then turns up dead – drowned in the trunk of one of a Congressman’s campaign vehicles.

The first two episodes show us three separate storylines that intertwine – first, that of agent Sarah Linden, who is about to move from rainy Seattle to sunshine-filled San Diego, when the murder of Rosie comes to the surface. She is so close to leaving, in fact, that it is on her last day on the job that her boss sends her out to do field work for the girl’s case. She is supposed to leave that night, but predictably does not.

The second story arc is that of the congressman, Darren Richmond – played by Billy Campbell (who I recognized from The O.C.). He is up for an election, and the girl’s body in a campaign car is not doing any good for his campaign.

The third storyline is that of Rosie and her family -- two parents and two brothers devastated by loss.

So far, the first three episodes have been slightly slow-moving nail-biters. I know, it sounds like a contradiction in terms, but hear me out: I have a feeling that we’re not going to find out who killed Rosie Larsen for a great long time (despite the fact that The Killing is based on a Denmark show and viewers could easily look up the plot of that if they wanted to), but the way in which the show pans around and examines potential suspects is intriguing. It’s easy to start an episode thinking, “He DEFINITELY did it,” but to end it by thinking, “No, that’s far too obvious.”

So who killed Rosie Larsen? I don’t know, but I’ll be watching to find out. The Killing airs on AMC on Sunday nights at 9PM CST/10PM EST.
