Halloween is just around the corner, which makes this a great time to celebrate with spooky movies. The Raven comes out on DVD tomorrow, just in time to get you started. Have some friends over this weekend to get the festivities going with a Raven watching party.

Party Food:

For appropriately Poe-inspired eats, consider going with a dirt cake decorated with cookie gravestones (for The Premature Burial) or broiled bacon-wrapped chicken hearts (Tell-Tale Heart, naturally). Not into spooky food? Take a cue from the Baltimore setting. Crab dip or crab cakes are a good choice if you’re feeling fancy, crab chips for if you’re not.

Beverage of Choice:

Chances are slim you won’t find any Amontillado at your local liquor store, but, any dry sherry will do. Greet guests with a chilled glass to start the party. Cognac, like that the Poe Toaster used to leave at Poe’s grave each year is another good choice. But you may want to move onto lighter beverage choices for the next part of the evening.

The requisite drinking game:

Have a sip when a raven appears.

Have a sip when the ground gets foggy.

Have two sips when they talk about Poe’s kidnapped bride-to-be.

Three sips whenever the killer taunts Poe & the detective.

When an Edgar Allen Poe tale is referenced, the last person to recognize the story must chug their drink.
