Michael Clarke Duncan died yesterday due to complications from a heart attack suffered in July. He was 54 years old. Duncan was best known for his portrayal of John Coffey in the critically acclaimed film The Green Mile. He was nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for the performance.
His success in The Green Mile led to more opportunities for the actor. He was a standout player in nearly every role he played. His imposing size lent menace to the villain Kingpin in Daredevil. His terrified sprint from the operating room in The Island as the clone of a disabled football player is one of the most affecting and frightening in the movie. He was easily the best thing in the Bones spin-off The Finder.
As a voice actor, he lent his distinctive deep timbre to several animated features, TV shows, and video games including Kung Fu Panda, Spiderman: The Animated Series, and The Green Lantern. Duncan chatted with Jennifer Tapiero of StarCam last year in the Golden Globes gifting suite. Hear what he had to say about what he was like as a kid, his favorite films and why kids should be encouraged to follow their dreams:
