Mariah Carey will be honored as a BMI Icon at the upcoming BMI Urban Awards, an event honoring top hip hop, pop, and R&B singers. The Awards, to be held in Beverly Hills September 7, will also feature an all-star musical tribute to the multi Grammy Award winning singer.

“Mariah Carey is one of the most prolifically successful songwriters of the last several decades in any genre of music,” reads a release. “With her distinct five-octave vocal range and the finesse with which she scaled it, Carey defined the modern pop performance, delivering the songs she wrote with awe-inspiring grace and power.”

BMI Icons are chosen because of  their “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” Past Icons include Snoop Dogg, James Brown, Little Richard, The Bee Gees, Willie Nelson, and Dolly Parton, among others.

Mariah Carey has sold over 200 million records throughout her 20-year career, and has written and performed such hits as “Hero,” “Vision of Love,” “Dreamlover,” and “Emotions.” The 42-year-old singer has also won a number of prestigious awards, including five Grammy Awards, 11 American Music Awards, and 31 Billboard Music Awards. She gave birth to twins last year.
