One of pop music’s brightest and bubbliest celebrities took a risk this week and covered a song that was a little different than her usual peppy ballads. Katy Perry performed her own version of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s hit “N***** in Paris” on London’s Radio 1 Live Lounge and she killed it!
You have to give the girl credit. There’s no way it’s easy to go from pop anthems to performing a rap song live; let alone a rap song by two of the industry’s most talented artists! The audience seemed to love Katy’s creativity and guts for trying something so bold, but there are a lot of people who aren’t very happy about some things she said after the show. There’s also been talk for a while about Katy collaborating with Rihanna and while both say it’s in the works; no one has heard anything yet. This is all fine and great until Katy said this:
“[Rihanna and I have] collaborated on a lot of things, but just not songs yet. It's one of those things that's got so much build up that we have to deliver. I want it to be like that Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin song ‘Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves,’ not ‘Beautiful Liar.’ But I definitely want to do something that is so iconic.”
In case you didn’t catch the issue in that statement, Katy is hating on Beyonce and Shakira. This isn’t very nice, but the Beyonce aspect is even more screwed up after she just covered her hubby Jay-Z’s track. It should be interesting to see what kind of response a comment like that gets from the couple!
