First it was the ruby red slippers, now it’s the wholesome blue and white pinafore. The iconic costume worn by Judy Garland in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz is heading to the auction block where it is expected to fetch more than half a million dollars.
The pinafore, which comes with a matching blouse, is one of the only complete sets known to exist and is the only set seen in the film. Valued between $400,000 and $600,000, the costume will be up for grabs at Julien Auction’s Icons & Idols Event on November 9th and 10th.
"It's one of those key pieces that I'm sure collectors all over the world are going to be after," pop culture expert Laura Woolley said in a video posted by Julien’s (below). "This is one piece that everybody recognizes instantly.”
Though Julien’s estimates a sale of half a million dollars, the final figure could be much higher. A dress Garland wore in The Wizard of Oz test shots fetched nearly a million last year, much more than projected.
The Wizard of Oz pinafore will be on public display at Julien’s Auctions November 5th – 8th. Learn more about the Icons & Idols Event here.
