It’s official. Joss Whedon will write and direct Avengers 2, the sequel to this spring’s ridiculously successful Avengers film (which he also directed). However, that’s not all the talented filmmaker has up his sleeve.
"Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015,” Marvel said in an official statement. “As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC.”
Of course, there are no details about the live action series Joss will help develop, but Empire speculates it could be the Incredible Hulk series, the AKA Jessica Jones series, or the “high concept cop show” Whedon has mentioned in the past.
The Avengers debuted in the United States on May 4 and went on to become the third-highest-grossing film of all time, racking up an astounding $1.46 billion worldwide.
As for the sequel, Avengers 2 is expected to hit theaters in 2015, after the next individual Avengers installments – Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World (both coming out next year) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians Of The Galaxy, due out in 2014.
