J.J. Abrams has at last committed to directing Star Trek 2, ending fears that he would not be involved with the sequel. Though fans expected the renowned director to return for Star Trek 2, Abrams made more than a few Trekkies nervous by refusing to officially confirm his return until now.

"I want to make sure I know what it is I'm being asked to direct before I do it," Abrams explained  earlier this year. “Although I'd be jealous of anyone else who got to work with that amazing group of actors. We're working on the story and getting there. I'm very excited about what Alex and Roberto have come up with so far."

Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Urban (Bones), John Cho (Sulu), and Zoe Saldana (Uhura) will also return for Star Trek 2 which is already in pre-production. Screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who penned the 2009 Star Trek script, are also back onboard. Empire Online reports that shooting should begin before Christmas.

So what’s next for the Star Trek gang? Abrams hasn’t revealed any plot details, though is dedicated to making a terrific sequel.

"The most important question is how to do something that we get excited about and that is worthy of the audience," he said.

Star Trek 2 should hit U.S. theaters sometime next year.
