Several major studios have delayed the release of their box office numbers out of respect for victims of the Aurora tragedy. The Thursday morning shooting, which erupted during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises, killed 12 and injured 58 others.
On Friday, Warner Bros. announced it would withhold box office estimates until today. Sony, Fox, Disney, Universal, Fox, and Lionsgate quickly followed suit. The studios normally release estimates on Sunday, hoping one of their pictures will make it to the top slot or shatter a box office record.
Despite Warner Bros.’ silence, insiders speculate that The Dark Knight Rises earned around $165 million over the weekend. If the figure is accurate, the film enjoyed the second highest weekend opening ever. The Avengers snagged the record in May with an opening of $200 million.
The studio estimates should be available later today. Stay tuned for StarCam's usual box office roundup.
