The DVD of Dexter’s sixth season came out today, and, just in time; this gives you just enough time to catch up before the seventh season premieres on September 20th. Before you settle in for a good Dexter marathon, make sure that you have plenty of event-appropriate snacks and drinks. A few suggestions:
The Perfect Bloody Mary
½ cup tomato juice
1 jigger good vodka
juice of half a lime
½ teaspoon horseradish
1 celery stick
sprinkling of Old Bay seasoning (buy in most grocery stores or online)
While Old Bay is not Miami-specific, there is no cocktail that comes to mind quicker for blood-splatter expert, blood-obsessed Dexter, nor is there a better bloody mary than those spiced with Old Bay. Trust me on this.
Shake all but the celery in a cocktail shaker with ice, and strain into a glass. Garnish with your celery.
Prefer sweet stuff? Have a brain hemorrhage!
1 shot peach schnapps
about half a shot Irish cream
drizzle of grenadine
Pour the schnapps into a shot glass. Dribble in Irish cream. The Irish cream with solidify into a “brain”. Drizzle a little grenadine over it to add some blood to your brain hemorrhage.
Enjoy this rum-based Miami favorite while you watch Dexter get ready to chop up the current episode’s victim. For each drink, you’ll need:
1/2 lime, cut into wedges
1 teaspoon sugar
3-4 mint leaves
1 ½ ounces white rum
½ cup club soda
Muddle the lime wedges, sugar and mint leaves in the bottom of a sturdy glass. Add plenty of ice to the glass. Pour the rum and club soda over and stir.
Smoked Fish Spread
This is served in casual bars in Miami & throughout Florida. Recipe adapted from GrillGrrl.
2 cups flaked smoked mullet, or other light fish
¼ cup mayonnaise
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 green onion, chopped
juice of one lime
½ tablespoon Everglades or Old Bay seasoning
Thoroughly combine all ingredients. Serve with tortilla chips or rounds of Cuban bread.
