It’s box office round-up time! Here are the weekend’s top ten performers.

Possession film The Devil Inside reigned supreme, earning $34.5 million its opening weekend. The film’s strong performance surprised industry experts who expected the found footage flick to fall flat.

“This one caught everyone looking, but the devil got his due,” said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “It's just very difficult to track the horror fan base, no question about it."

The Devil Inside knocked Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol to second place while Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows fell to number three. The action films, both in their fourth week at the box office, made $20.5 million and $14 million respectively.

Fourth place goes to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The film, based on Steig Larsson’s novel by the same name, earned $11.3 million its third week at the box office. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked rounds out the list of top 5 box office performers with a weekend take of $9.5 million. The family film has earned an astounding $111 million so far.

War Horse, We Bought a Zoo, and The Adventures of Tintin are next on the list of top performers, respectively earning $8.6, $8.4, and $6.6 million. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy broke into the top ten over the weekend, earning $5.7 million its fifth week at the box office, while New Years Eve fell to number ten with a weekend take of $3.2 million.
