With the end of the Harry Potter series, the final release in the Twilight Saga and the recent release of The Hunger Games, teens and young adults are going to be in need of a new series to get wrapped up in soon. Sure, The Hunger Games just hit theaters last Friday, but the second in the series, Catching Fire, is slated for release next year and the third and final, Mockingjay will be released shortly after that. Where will fans divert their attention next?
When movies like these hit theaters, there’s a rush to read the books as quickly as possible. There have to be other great fiction novels out there for Twihards, Potter heads and HG Tributes to turn to once all the books have been read and movies have been made, right? Indeed! Here is a list of the novels that are next on the list to become the box office topping series!
1. Beautiful Creatures
This tale involves two teens being drawn together by a bizarre connection and some supernatural secrets. Filming has already started and there’s an incredibly solid cast on board at this point, including: Viola Davis, Emma Thompson, Jeremy Irons, Margo Martindale and Emmy Rosum. It’s set for release Feb. 1, 2013.
2. Blood Red Road
This story has a bit of a darker twist to it. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where a 18-year-old girl named Saba sets out on a mission to find her brother who has been kidnapped by a warlord. The warlord plans to sacrifice him, so it's a race against time for Saba. The film and concept is still in development phases right now.
3. Delirium
Imagine if love had been deemed a disease and at the age of 18 everyone was forced to undergo a surgery that prevented you from ever falling for someone else. That’s the basis of this novel, but with a romantic twist. Lena is about to go under the knife when she falls in love with a boy who helps her escape the fate of a loveless life. This is the first book in a trilogy and the series hasn’t officially taken off yet. The film is still in development, but those working on it are hoping that over the next year or two the titles will become well-known names!
4. Ender’s Game
This one has some sci-fi to it. It’s set in a time where the earth is at war with an alien race and children are sent into orbit to train to become soldiers of the future. Filming just began and the release date is set for March 15, 2013. The film stars Abigail Breslin, Viola Davis, Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley.
5. Through To You
A teenage boy grieving over his girlfriend’s death meets a woman from a parallel universe and finds out that his girlfriend is still alive in that world. He sets out on a mission to win her back. The book doesn’t come out until October, but Paramount and Montecito have had the movie rights since last March.
6. The Seventh Son
Medieval England is plagued with supernatural creatures and Tom, the seventh son of a seventh son, is taken in by a Spook to learn how to fight them off. This film is scheduled to start filming any day now and will hit theaters Feb. 15, 2013.
7. How I Live Now
This one has some real potential behind it. The book tells the story of an American girl who is staying with her English cousins when World War III breaks out and she’s forced to fight for her life. Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan is set to be the lead. Filming is expected to start in the next few months with a release set for some time in 2013.
8. The Knife of Never Letting Go
This film is still in development and would resemble the violent and dark nature of The Hunger Games. It’s about a boy who is the one left in a settlement without women and men constantly hear each other’s thoughts; which is referred to as the noise. He escapes and finds a girl who is able to create silence.
9. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
A normal New York teen discovers she is the latest in line to be a part of a secret, demon-battling society called the Shadowhunters. While battling evil, she falls for Jace, a fellow Shadowhunter. This film is currently recasting the male lead, but should start rolling cameras this year.
10. Pure
This book-to-big-screen adaptation is also still in development. It’s about a nuclear disaster that leaves the world divided. There are “the pures,” who remained untouched and “the wretches,” who were fused to whatever object they were in contact with at the time of the detonation. The story line involves a pure and a wretch who are drawn together in a search to solve a murder.
